From Zica to Tiago
There was a lot of interest in the automobile market when Tata took the wraps off its upcoming hatchback, the Zica in 2015 December. But, shortly after the unveiling, Tata was forced to change the name of the car as it shared its name with a deadly virus – Zika Virus – that has affected millions of people.
In February 2016, Tata rechristened Zica – the new name, Tiago, was decided via public voting. Tata Tiago will finally be launched on March 28.
The Tata Tiago looks different from the standard entry level hatchbacks. It is a blend of a conventional hatchback with the new age tall boy design thus looking appealing with its sporty design and aggressive low stance The signature smiley grille at the front looks good with the spearhead-shaped swept back headlamps. The bumper comes with sports honeycomb air-dams and it also houses circular fog lamps in the top-end trim. From the side, Tiago can be seen with a sharp cut shoulder line and a horizontal character line at the bottom. The edgy design on the rear makes the Tiago look appealing. Inside the cabin
The Tiago can be partly customised with some removable panels. Tiago is only available with a black interior. The cabin gets a large centre console which now comes with Bluetooth enabled touchscreen, along with AUX and USB connectivity and satnav which can be accessed via the MapMyIndia app. A few other standard features that will be seen on the new Tiago are height adjustable driver’s seat, ABS, electrically adjustable ORVMs, steering mounted audio controls and more.
Rear leg space and shoulder room is good, though the Tiago does slightly suffer when it comes to seat comfort due to its narrow seat bottoms that do not offer great under thigh support. The Tiago is also slightly low on headroom on the rear. The Tiago comes with a 245-litre boot.
The Tata Tiago will be launched with new petrol and diesel power plants. The 1.2-litre 3-pot petrol engine generates 85 PS of power and 114 Nm. The 1.0-litre 3-cylinder diesel unit generates maximum power of 70 PS and peak torque of 140 Nm. The diesel is expected to return over 25 kmpl in terms of fuel mileage. The engines come mated to a 5-speed transmission.
The Tiago will compete against the likes of the Hyundai i10 and the Maruti Suzuki Celerio.
The Tata Tiago will be launched at a starting price of Rs 4 lakh. Tata Motors has already commenced bookings for the Tiago with a minimum booking amount of Rs 10,000.
The Tiago will be marketed using legendary footballer Lionel Messi. But we will have to wait and watch whether Tata have upped their game this year with the Tiago.
