Clenbuterol in Research Trials

Clenbuterol is typebeta2-adrenergic agonists, which is a type of bronchodilator.  It relaxes and dilates (enlarges) lung airways and makes it easier to breathe.

Beta2-agonists are first-line therapies for treating stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with intermittent symptoms (those that that come and go) and are utilized for both short and long-term symptom alleviation.  It is also allowed before exercise to lessen breathing problems. Veterinarians also use Beta2-agonists for the same purpose for non-food animals.

Bodybuilders, athletes, and that seeking rapid weight loss are always seeking pharmaceutical means of boosting their results.  Clenbuterol is one of the drugs that they believe will help them.

Clenbuterol Research Trials

Research on Horses

In research trials Clenbuterol’s long-term use on horses and the effect on their hearts.  After eight weeks, the horses’ hearts showed structural changes that made them perform less efficiently and subjected them to potential heart conditions.  The abstract of the report reveals the dosage provided was 2.4 micrograms x kg (-1) body weight twice daily.

As well, data revealed showed that the Clenbuterol horses’ maximum oxygen volume uptake level was lower as compared to the non-Clenbuterol horses, indicating that they would become more easily tired and have a lower workout tolerance.  While the variations were present only after exertion, the researchers believed prolonged use would cause more apparent changes.

According to Nicholas Frank, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVIM, Department Chair of Clinical Sciences at Tufts University’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, horses are superb subjects for examining human conditions.  Humans and horses’ essentialphysiology and systems are alike, so research conducted on one could be translated to the other.

Trial on Spinal and Bulbar Muscular Atrophy

In May 2013, a clinical trial was conducted on patients with spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy, also known as Kennedy’s Disease, a condition of the dedicated nerve cells that regulate muscle movement. Muscle wasting or atrophy in the arms and legs typically begins in adulthood and deteriorates slowly over time.  Other symptoms include falling, muscle twitches, and gradually worsening problems with speech and swallowing.

Clenbuterol was provided at 0.02 mgfor 2 days, then 0.02 mg, 1 tablet twice day (total, 0.04 mg/d).

The year long assessment revealed improved motor functions on the patients and no serious side effects, including those on heart function, were noted.

Conclusions

Sites that recommend using Clenbuterol say to take in in cycles and begin in doses as low as 20 mcg and go to doses as high as 140 mcg.  One sells it at 200 mcg.  This is the same dosage as the clinical trial for Kennedy’s Disease, which found no side effects on heart function.  That study, however, was performed on individuals with serious neurological deficits.

Reports on the Internet reveal harsh side effects, some of which include:

  • high blood pressure, even to the point of heart attack and stroke
  • raised heart rate
  • heart palpitations, even to the point of skipped beats and accelerated beats
  • difficulty breathing
  • anxiety and nervousness
  • headaches
  • dry mouth
  • sweating
  • overheatededness
  • sleeplessness
  • nausea and vomiting
  • muscle cramps

Long-term side effects can also include:

  • Increased heart size, which could lessen the heart’s effectiveness, causing arrhythmias or irregular heartbeats and increasing the risk of strokes.
  • Heart cell degeneration, increasing the risk of sudden death and aortic rupture.
  • Worsening of pre-existing heart problems or blood pressure conditions.
  • If taken in high doses, left sided cardiac atrophy.
  • Bone disturbances and weakness, leading to greater risk of fracture.
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Subaortic stenosis, which is an obstruction in the heart’s ventricular outflow.

Clenbuterol overdose can be fatal.

Some parts of Europe and the United States forbid Clenbuterol, yet it body builders and those who want to lose weight quickly still seek it out.  As with most illegal and/or banned medications, it can be found on the Internet or ““black markets.”

For anyone considering taking Clenbuterol, proceed with caution and do your research.  Are rapid weight and a more muscular body more important than your health and safety?
